by Joe Watkins
|
| Book descriptoin: Joe Watkins was born in Perry County, Kentucky in 1951.
When he was five years old his family, left the Appalachian
Mountains that had been home for generations and moved
to Cincinnati, Ohio, where both parents took jobs in
factories. They were part of the great migration. Joe and his three brothers, grew up in the city, but their hearts were always in the hills of Kentucky.
In this account Joe meanders down memory lane, recalling the best of his childhood. He tells of long summer visits with his grandparents in the Appalachian hills and hollows of Southeastern Kentucky, how he and his brothers and his many cousins explored caves and old coal mine shafts, swam in the West Fork of the Kentucky River and helped their Mamaw clean glass jars for the canning of home grown vegetables.
An era and a people of Appalachia that no longer exist, comes to life once again in these stories spun by one of its own.
